Stop the flash.
Keep your eyes.

Dark Background Anti-Flash smooths out the blinding white flash on page loads and tab switches—with a dark overlay that fades out on its own.

How it works

Same page. Same brightness.
Just not all at once.

Without the extensionDark page → bright page
With Dark Background Anti-FlashDark page → bright page
  1. 01 Guard firstThe content script runs at document_start and paints a dark overlay before the page's first frame.
  2. 02 HoldIt stays put for a moment (220 ms by default) while the page renders underneath.
  3. 03 FadeThe overlay dissolves over 1.8 s, so brightness ramps up instead of spiking.
  4. 04 GoneThe overlay is removed. The page itself was never changed.

Shown in slow motion so each step is visible. Hold and fade times are adjustable, separately for page loads and tab switches.

It only fades when it helps.

Before fading, the extension checks whether you're coming from a dark (or unknown) screen and going to a bright one, across sites and on tab switches.

→Fades

Dark to bright is the jump that hurts, so it gets softened.

→No fade

Your eyes are already adjusted to bright pages, so there's nothing to soften.

→No fade

A dark destination can't flash you, so the guard clears right away.

What it does

Bright screens hurt.
This extension stops noticing them.

01

Fade guard

A temporary dark overlay covers the page on load and on tab switch, then fades out smoothly once the page has settled.

02

Bright-page detection

Detects bright pages automatically and can replace bright CSS backgrounds outright, not just mask them.

03

Transition-aware

Fades only trigger moving from a dark or unknown surface into a bright one—including across origins—so it never gets in the way.

04

Per-site rules

Blacklist pages where you never want it, or whitelist only the ones where you do.

Real settings, not a demo

Every option here is real.

Tune the overlay color, timing, and thresholds—or leave the defaults and forget it's there.

  • Independent page-load and tab-switch timing. Set each transition's delay and duration separately.
  • 10 languages, no account needed. Settings sync through the browser's own sync storage.

Private by default

No servers, no analytics, no data leaving your device.

The extension processes the current page's URL and rendered colors locally, only to decide whether and how to apply its effects. Preferences and per-site rules are stored with the browser's own sync storage—the developer doesn't run a server and never receives them.
